Cake – I absolutely love it! I could eat a slice of cake every day. So I always manage to find a reason to have a slice. Just to celebrate the sunshine, because our review score has gone up again, or simply because someone’s popping round for a coffee. Cake is simply part of life. I’m sure you can see where this is going – in this blog, I’m going to tell you where to find the tastiest cake in Amsterdam! Because, well, you never know if you’ll have something to celebrate when you come to Amsterdam, and you might just happen to be looking for a good place for cake. Well then, I’ll start at the beginning, and for me, that’s Holtkamp. If it’s not simply because my grandmother always used to go there to buy cake, then it’s certainly because I really can never make up my mind at Holtkamp. Holtkamp is close to the hotel and is a real institution in Amsterdam – absolutely everything there is delicious! They also have lovely chocolates and croquettes, by the way.
We’re off to my favourite street in Amsterdam, the Utrechtstestraat. That’s where Patisserie Kuyt is. My absolute favourite there is the hazelnut meringue cake. Whenever I go there, that’s really the only thing I ever buy. And the ‘bokkenpootjes’. But that’s more of a family tradition. My grandmother’s best friend often comes round for a cup of tea and brings them with her.
Another of my favourite places to buy cake is at Pompadour in the Nine Streets. This shop is situated in one of my favourite areas of Amsterdam. Just the sight of the shop window is enough to make my cake-loving heart beat faster.
De Kwekkeboom is also a great place to go for delicious cake. If only because they serve double-decker mille-feuilles there. And I can tell you, they’re not as good anywhere else as they are there.
It wasn’t just my birthday that prompted me to write a blog about patisseries in Amsterdam. One of our regular hotel guests was also a source of inspiration. This gentleman has a rather “delicious” job. He’s a pastry chef and flies all over the world to – yes, you guessed it – taste cakes and find inspiration for new flavours. You can imagine that this makes my cake-loving heart very happy.
I’d say: let’s eat cake!
